Item up for sale is the original January 26, 1943, edition of the Rocky Mountain News, a Denver, Colorado, newspaper: the lead story of the day concerned the European theatre of battle during World war ll. In Marseille France, desperate partisans had barricaded themselves into their homes after Nazi authorities and their puppet Vichy government had ordered the evacuation of 10,000 persons from the famous port city. The Nazis attributed the intended purge to a criminal element that had infiltrated the populous, but they also were rounding up Jewish citizens in their ever tightening noose called the " Final Solution," the extermination of all Jews. The Nazis also desired vast tracts of the French waterfront at Marseille in order to fortify the area as part of their coastal defenses for the intended invasion by allied troops. This newspaper is still readable after 75 years due to its high quality paper. This is a great item suitable for framing.
