    Description

Item for sale is an original edition of the January 3rd, 1940, Philadelphia, The Record. The newspaper reports on the attempted suicide of Unity Valkyrie Mitford - Freeman, whom Hitler had once called his " perfect Nordic beauty, " by gunshot. Unity Mitford was a young English socialite, who became an avid devotee of Nazism and Socialism. As a member of the British Delegation of Fascist, she would attend the famed 1933 Nuremberg Rally with her sister Diana Mitford. She would become enthralled with the despot and in 1934 she would enroll in a school close to the Nazi Party Headquarters. She would become obsessed with meeting him and would visit places that he frequented. She would see him at a café, Osteria Bavaria, and after 10 months he would invite her to his table. He would become smitten with her and began to invite her to rallies and meetings. She would be ushered into his inner circle and remain there for 5 years. She would fall under the radar of British authorities and covert operatives along with her sister Diana and be suspected of high treason. After Britain declared war on Germany in 1939 for attacking Poland, she and her sister would be torn between the two countries, Britain and Germany. Diana, would return to her native England where she would be arrested and imprisoned. Unity, would attempt suicide by shooting herself in the head with a pistol. She would be hospitalized and convalesce in neutral, Bern, Switzerland. She would return to England with her mother and remain in poor condition from her injuries. In 1948 she would contract meningitis and die at the age of 33. This is a nice historic item concerning the private life of Adolph Hitler, at the early stages of his march to infamy. This item is described above and is suitable for framing.
