Circa 1950s Pictorial History Booklet: “Afton Villa, St. Francisville, West Feliciana Parish, Louisiana” compiled by Eleanor Lind and Dorothy Percy. Printed by Gulf South Advertising and Marketing Service, Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Booklet has a stapled binding and 16 pages counting covers. Color frontispiece showing painting of “Mistress and Daughter.”
One page “Plan of Afton Villa, showing first floor and gardens.” Seven black and white photographs showing furnishings, rooms, and exterior views of the Villa, including South Front view; Sunparlor with its decorative woodwork; the Front Stair and cathedral window; Hand painted door knob imported from Dresden; Parlor and its original suite; Ballroom; and the color “Shield of Tours” in the Sunparlor. The front cover shows a photo of the elderly gatekeeper who welcomed visitors.
Stated in booklet: “… an old gray-haired Negro, humble yet dignified in frocktail coat and tall silk hat (who is an) authentic reminder of the days before the Civil War - bids visitors to enter … As the gates are opened by their genial keeper, the visitors step out of a matter-of-fact world into the charm and romance of a bygone age….
The mansion burned down in 1963, but the gardens are still maintained.
