Hand Painted Turkish Pottery - 12" Charger Plate, Avanos, Turkey - Late 20th C.
Being offered for your consideration is a large 12” diameter hand painted Turkish Ceramic charger / plate. The charger is hand decorated with what we believe is a decorated Turkish coffee pot surrounded by stylized floral decorations surrounded by a blue flower petal border. The colors used in painting the decorations are blue, turquoise, aubergine (purple), green, red, pink, amber and black. The coffee pot is decorated with a white stylized motif on a dappled blue ground. On the backside of the plate are Middle Eastern words: “
SIRGA / OZEL ELISHI / EMINE-FADIME / AVANOS, TURKIYE
” The best translation we can determine is that this piece was a “

Avanos
is a town and district of Nevsehir Province
in the Central Anatolia
region of Turkey.
The old city of Avanos, whose name in ancient times was Venessa, overlooks the longest river of Turkey, the Kizilirmak (Red River), which also separates Avanos from the rest of Cappadocia.
The most famous historical feature of Avanos, which is still relevant and very visible today, is its production of earthenware pottery; it is also the most economic activity in the town. The ceramic trade in this district and its countless pottery factories date right back to the Hittites and the ceramic clay from the red silt of the Kızılırmak has always been used. It is a popular destination because of its attractive old town with cobbled streets, and views over the river.
Measurements
: The charger/plate measures approximately 12" across in diameter. It stands approximately 1-1/2" from the table at the rim of the plate. The charger/plate weighs approximately 2 lbs., 9 ounces. All measurements are approximate, but close.
Condition
: We carefully examined this item. NO Chips, Cracks, Scratches, Stains, Repairs or Restorations were noted. There is some very faint. light crazing noted on the glaze that is not distracting. A nice bell tone resonance is heard when the plate is tapped at the edge with your finger.
