    Description

There are four traditional centers of miniature lacquered box painting in Russia and the surrounding countries, which today have become the most famous. They are Fedoskino, Palekh, Mstera and Kholui. Mstera lacquerware typically depicts beautiful floral or elaborate fairytale-like fantasies based on folk, historical, or literary works. The Mstera belief in God is the reason their lacquerware brooch backgrounds are in lighter colors vs. black as the other traditional lacquered styles. This wooden lacquer brooch pin is hand-painted in the beautiful Mstera style w/ the artist signature on the edge (see photo with pencil). I believe this splendid brooch depicts the Russian folk tale concerning a young man and a donkey. Dimensions: Approximately 2 inches in diameter.
