Description

HIGHLY IMPORTANT WESTERN UNION TELEGRAPH CO LETTER DATED APRIL 1st 1868 CONCERNING THE REBUILDING OF THE TELEGRAPH LINES IN NORTH CAROLINA - PART OF THE SOUTHERN DIVISION OF
THE WESTERN UNION TELEGRAPH CO.
This wonderful TWO (2) page manuscript letter is from T. N. Dornell SUPERINTENDANT to the SOUTHERN DIVISION of the WESTERN UNION TELEGRAPH COMPANY out of Richmond VA.,
dated April 1, 1968.
THIS LETTER IS NOT A PHOTOCOPY.   THIS LETTER IS ENTIRELY HANDWRITTEN IN INK, AUTHENTIC AND OF THE PERIOD JUST AFTER THE CIVIL WAR.
The letter is directed to SAMUEL MC D. TATE - PRESIDENT of the NORTH CAROLINA RAIL ROAD and is asking to use his company's locomotives to haul lumber for new telegraph poles for rebuilding the Western Union telegraph lines between Greensboro SC and Charlotte NC - and purchase same and haul it from the area between Morgantown and Salisbury.   The telegraph lines of the South after the Civil War were destroyed by "SHERMAN'S MARCH to the SEA"
and it was not until three years AFTER Lincoln was assassinated and the Civil War was over in April of 1865, that business became normalized in the South with Northern interests and efforts were made to rebuild the telegraph lines that had been destroyed.
This letter OBVIOUSLY was the ONLY MEANS of communications between these two people - as the telegraph lines OBVIOUSLY were not back up and running!
A fascinating letter that give's a keen insight into the situation at the time - as the United States of America began to nurture itself back on track to normalcy following the Civil War between the North and the South.
Both pages of this two page manuscript letter are in excellent condition with no tears or foxing or fading of the ink.
Please look at the photographs, as they are part of the description.
Each page measures  8 1/4" x 10 7/8" and each has two folds from having been folded and placed in a standard number 10 envelope.
