    Description

Offered for sale is this quality vintage acrylic painting.    The artwork appears to have been done on a board, and has a quality frame.
The painting has the subject matter which is Judaica related.     We believe the scene is of a man wearing a Yarmulke passing a cup (of wine?) with the star of David to another who is wearing a Tallis, while a woman and a boy with a Yarmulke look on.     It appears that a ceremony of some kind is being depicted.
There is a piece of masking tape on the black paper, on the back side of the painting, with ink writing which reads "#3 Lauer / Life Cycle 3: The Brith/Acrylics".    This would lead one to believe that being pictured here may be the ceremony of a Brith ( Bris).
The painting measures about 23 1/2" wide x 20" tall, within a frame that measures about 29" wide x 25 1/2" tall.     It is displayed in a wood frame with carved detailing, and painted in a gold gilt.     It is an elegant and quality framing treatment, still in good condition with some expected rub / bump wear.    The painting is also in very good condition.
After looking at the back side of the painting, we did some research. &nbp   We found a Rabbi named Yosef Lauer ( 1863-1932 ) who came to the USA with his family in 1904 from Slovakia, and who lived in New York.     The Rabbi was a Mohel and amongst his many Rabbinical talents, he performed thousands of Brith.    His eldest son named Isidor Lauer was a monument dealer who designed and executed his fathers headstone.    Isidor was also a Cantor ( Hazan ), as well as a talented artist.     It may just be a coincidence, but perhaps the painting could have been done by Isidor Lauer circa 1950s.
We leave the question of who painted this picture open as a possiblity.     At any rate, the painting is intriguing, and is all ready to be displayed in a home where Judaica subject matter and art would be greatly appreciated.
