MGM Auction movie prop large and impressive 18 inch early Ben Hur silver Roman Eagle Standard. Most of Hollywoods Roman Movie standard parts and other misc items were cast in aluminum and painted gold from 1912 to the 1960's. This one came from a large collection of vintage Hollywood "Sword and Sandal" props and costumes which were mostly purchased at the 1970 MGM auction but it may have been made for either Universal Studios, Columbia Pictures or even 20th Century Fox as I have not been able to locate it in any MGM films. However the wooden staff design that the eagle is clutching is identical to an MGM gold painted eagle staff being clutched in my collection. This one was never painted and most likely was never used due to some casting flaws and may be also be why I cant find it. Still a very large (18 inches across) and impressive and extremely rare piece. It could have also been made to adorn a Roman building like on the forum or colosseum or made to adorn the emperors chair as I have found many examples of all three of these using things using eagles etc besides Roman standards. Large aluminum eagles were also used on both vintage costumes as well as armor. See the attach pictures of an another aluminum eagle of mine. I also have the ability to fix the defects on the eagle and finish it in gold if you are interested for a fee.
