Description
For sale is an exceedingly scarce copy of the Stars and Stripes US military newspaper published in Shanghai, China at the end of WWII. April 13 1946 issue is the last issue of the newspaper published after an approximately 8-month run. It is likely the last US military publication published on Chinese territory as an occupying/allied military force, an idea that would be outrageous given recent relations. I can find no other extant copies of this rare issue anywhere, except in the microfilm at the Library of Congress. Interesting issue explains how it stopped publishing because the staff it needed had become too small to continue, with US personnel returning to the US "It has been with conflicting emotion that I have watched China Theater gradually disintegrate from a powerful military organization, creating conditions within China for a definite contribution to the war against Japan, to a smaller and smaller force whose principal mission remains to facilitate the final close out of the theater," it is printed on the cover.
