Description
Offering a Vintage JH Bunnell & CO for Western Electric, 1B local sounder, 400 or 100 OHMS.All 1B sounders were set up, labeled, and shipped by Western Un--- the manufacturer to as 400 OHM Local Sounders but they can also be connected as 100 OHM sounders. 1B sounders are used in larger telegraph offices and central offices as Local Sounders that were powered from the DC voltage available at that office. The sounders were controlled by relays with the Relay's electromagnet coils connected to the telegraph line. All Western un--- Local Sounders draw either 250 Milliamperes or 300 Milliamperes. The available local voltages were 1 volt in small offices; such as railroad stations; 30 volts at larger offices that had several telegraphers to pass a higher volume of traffic, and 100 volts at Central Offices that served dozens of telegraph lines. 1A sounders have a coil resistance of 4 OHMS. At 1 volt it draws 0.250 Milliamperes. 1B sounders can be connected at 400 OHMS for use at 100 volts which also draws 250 Milliamperes of current or connected at 100 OHMS for use at 30 volts thus passing 300 Milliamperes.
The key in your listing is of Japanese manufacture. It was made from the mid 1950s until a few years ago as a starter key for beginning amateur radio operators. You can find "JAPAN" cast into the underside of the frame at the terminal end.
