This item was purchased at auction and found in the footlocker of a paratrooper from the 550th Airborne Glider Infantry Battalion. This unit was nearly wiped out during the Ardennes deployment while attached to the 17th Airborne Division in Belgium.
This letter was found with this footlocker:
Belgium 1/04/1945
"We are making an attack this morning. Funny how fast some things can happen. When not expected, like a dark cloud racing across the blue. Last night my assistant gunner and myself dug our machine gun in what we considered an excellent position, getting a good field of fire, most of it grazing out to our front.
The fellows are not nervous; I wouldn’t say they’re not scared. Most of them have seen action before. But everybody is very silent and goes about this task of checking ammo.
Well, we’re moving out, this is it. Along our road, where this is, (are) some knocked out American tanks. The GI’s (are) still inside, nobody has had time to remove their bodies, for this place has changed hands recently.
There goes our artillery with a creeping barrage, beginning about a hundred yards to our front and traversing up, knocking down trees and everything in its path. They gave us perfect support. As we move into the attack, the Jerri’s open up with everything they have and (on) every side of me Guys are getting hit. Blood sure as hell shows up on this snow. We put our Machine guns in action and give them a taste of their own medicine. We could see Jerri’s running around on the hill and in the small village to our front. A Jerry squad of about 6 or 8 men were moving up the hill to our right front. I laid my machine gun on them and gave them a long burst of fire. By this time the Jerri artillery was zeroing in on us. We had to move our gun, and fast. I burned my wrist in the haste on the water jacket which was very hot."
S/Sgt Eddie Adams
550th Glider Infantry Battalion
On the 4th, 5th and 6th of January 1945, 76 years ago. the 550th Glider infantry Battalion went into a terrible attack against the German Army some 30 miles South West of Bastogne near the little village of Renuamont Belgium. This was a small part a larger battle that was later termed The Battle of the Bulge or the German Ardennes counter offensive.
On the morning of the 4th of January 1945, the valley was covered with snow, almost up to the airborne troopers waists. It was one of the coldest days that this part of Belgium had seen in almost one century.
In the battle that followed the lightly armed U.S airborne soldiers initially took the town but that night they were counter attacked by German armored units. They were ordered not to retreat in spite of the fact that they had no effective anti tank weapons. In the ensuing battle The battalion was nearly wiped out. Several hundred survivors made it to a rear area several days later out of a pre battle Battalion of approximately 750 men. Eddie Adams, the letter writer, survived the battle and was sent to a hospital in Great Britain for treatment of the burn mentioned in the letter.
